Sculpture at Deloraine Tip by
Paul Noordanus

Tales of the Tip, a sculpture of environmental art for the Deloraine Landfill, was created to celebrate the recycling and reuse abilities of the people of Deloraine. Instigated by Tasmanian Trash Transformers to celebrate our 7th birthday, we worked with local artists and Arts Deloraine to create a celebration to remember. The project's success was due to the involvement of over 70 volunteers who offered their time and talents to make the evening a night to remember. Support was received from Arts Tasmania and the Meander Valley Council.

Created by Paul Noordanus with assistance from Jarrod Hume, the artwork is built entirely from industrial scrap steel, and is installed on site at the Deloraine landfill.

Standing over five metres tall, the static structure of the support pillars stand in contrast to the dynamic flow of the free-formed sculpture, representing the transformation of trash into form and beauty. The work aims to reflect and inspire ongoing community pride in the principles of reuse and recycling.

The launch of the sculpture was a night to behold. With theatre, poetry, music and madness, over 200 splendidly attired patrons celebrated the birthday event. Fine mulled wine took the winter's chill off the air, as the spectacular performances unrolled. Fashion Victims took us all down memory lane, exposing the fashions, the music and the belief systems of each decade. Fire twirlers in futuristic armour created from cooking utensils acquired from the Tip Shop, performed a stunning opening ceremony. Poets, comedians and story tellers, Adelle King, Tony Woodward, Tim Thorne and Shayne Breen made us laugh and united us in our passion for creation from waste. Film maker, Beverley Jefferson created a short film on the project and the Tip, using the eloquence of local tip shoppers to portray the sense of community pride in the site.

The Tales of the Tip project provided Deloraine with a magnificent public artwork, a celebration of Tasmanian Trash Transformers, and tales to re-tell for years to come
